Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions we hear most from prospective students across Lockhart, San Marcos, New Braunfels, Austin, and San Antonio.
Getting Started
A Discovery Flight is an introductory lesson that pairs you with instructor Evan C. Chapman for hands-on time at the controls of the Cessna 172H, along with a ground briefing on what flight training involves. It's the most common first step for anyone considering pilot training and the easiest way to find out whether flight training is right for you before enrolling in a full program.
About Chapman Flight Academy
At a large-volume flight school, students are often assigned whichever aircraft and instructor happen to be available, and instructor turnover is common. Chapman Flight Academy is an independent operation: you train one-on-one with the same instructor, Evan C. Chapman, CFI/CFII, in the same aircraft, for the entire course of your training. That consistency can mean a more personalized, disciplined approach to instruction and scheduling built around your availability rather than a fixed class structure.
Service Area
Yes. Chapman Flight Academy is based at Lockhart Municipal Airport (50R) and regularly trains students from Lockhart, San Marcos, New Braunfels, South Austin, San Antonio, Kyle, and Buda. See our city-specific pages for approximate drive times.
Aircraft & Equipment
TAA stands for Technically Advanced Airplane, an FAA designation (14 CFR 61.129) for aircraft equipped with a primary flight display, multi-function display, GPS-based navigation, and (for aircraft manufactured after August 2018, or otherwise meeting the regulation's equipment standard) a two-axis autopilot. Chapman Flight Academy's Cessna 172H is TAA-equipped with a Garmin GTN-750 navigator, dual Garmin G5 electronic flight displays, and a Garmin GFC-500 autopilot. Training in a TAA aircraft is required for certain Commercial Pilot certification paths and builds skills directly applicable to modern general aviation and charter aircraft.
Certificates & Ratings
Private Pilot License, Instrument Rating, and Commercial Pilot training, along with flight reviews, Instrument Proficiency Checks (IPCs), ground instruction, currency flights, proficiency training, and mock checkrides. See the Flight Training and Other Training Services pages for details on each.
